When I first read the field notes of Annie Alexander and Louise Kellogg, I was fascinated by the descriptions they wrote about the places they went and the plants and animals they found there. By publishing my field notes on the Internet I hope to follow a little bit in their tradition.

Collected under Permit#: MOJA-2001-SCI-0015, Vegetation of Lobo Point and North Wild Horse Mesa.

Coll. No. 122, 29 April 1997, characters observed while keying: Annual, tap-rooted, to 15 cm.; Stems, leaves, and phyllaries all wooly; Leaves, alternate, not decurrent, 1°(2°) pinnate lobed; Inflorescence, none of the flowers with strap-shaped corollas, flowers of 1 kind, heads discoid, peduncled, cylindric to obconic; Phyllaries, in 2 series, ±equal (outer ≤ inner), ≤7 mm., green, margins not scarious; Receptacle, epaleate; Pappus, of well-developed flat scales, #4, ≤3 mm.; Corollas, yellow, open during day.

This keyed out fairly easily to Chaenactis glabriuscula var. glabriuscula by way of TJM2 Asteraceae Group 7. However, the location of this collection is way out of range for that taxon. There is one other collection of this taxon from the eastern Mojave (H. S. Reed, s.n., May 5, 1935, Wheaton Springs, UC914160) for which the determination or location has been questioned. If the corolla color is described as “… rarely pale yellow …” then the Chaenactis key takes one to a determination of “Chaenactis hybrid.” However, the yellow color of the corolla looks strong to me, which pretty much forces one into Chaenactis glabriuscula.

Coll. No. 124, keyed 4 Nov 2012, characters observed while keying: Annual green, not-parasitic; Pedicel in fruit 1 mm. (2x > than described in TJM2); Calyx radial, 5-lobed, free in fruit, > nutlets in fruit, lobe tip bristles straight (not hooked, although nutlet margin cilia are hooked); Corolla white; Stamens number = corolla lobes; Nutlets 4, paired, spreading, obovate.

Read this, "[hairs have a] … swollen base, surrounded by a tesselated rosette of radially oriented cells." Wish I had written that description.

7:30PM. Calm so far this evening, high overcast, a little breeze in the upper trees. Good day collecting, 40 specimens, one press full, another maybe tomorrow. Keckiella has very few small leaves, Krameria barren, Prunus fasciculata isn't blooming, neither is mystery plant. Saw one Calochortus kennedyi in the road to Wild Horse Mesa. Cricket just started chirping.
