Scanned 9 November 2016. Of the three characters that distinguish subsp. cathcartiana from subsp. oregana, two, spore size and adaxial epidermal cell size, require measuring in units of µm, something outside the usual abilities of the field botanist. The third character, regarding the cells on pinnule margins being irregular in shape making the margins appear ragged, can be seen with a good microscope.
