Schizachne purpurescens Hackel.  False Melicgrass.

Morrison Creek, Jefferson County, Colorado. Lower part of a small gulch tributary to Morrison Creek, 1.25 km. south of NF Road 550 61.8 km. south of the GNIS location of Golden. 39.3299°N, 105.2837°W. WGS 1984 Elev. 2378 m.. Fronts of sheaths and proximal glumes are reddish-purple. Damp forest floor, also collected here: Lonicera involucrata, Pedicularis canadensis, Dodecatheon pulchellum, and Oryzopsis asperifolia.

No. 2523, 23 June 2021, characters observed: Perennial grass, to 40 cm., weakly rhizomatous (?); Leaves, blade and sheath differentiated; Sheath, closed, front reddish-purple; Ligule, membraneous, 1 mm., auricles absent; Blade, 160 mm. × 3.5 mm. wide, flat to revolute, glabrous; Inflorescence, narrow panicle; 110 mm. × 15 mm. wide, branches, 2; Spikelets, many, 22 mm. × 4 mm. wide, similar, borne singly, pedicels, 3-13 mm. Compression, lateral; Disarticulation, between florets; Glumes, lower, 6 mm., veins, 3, upper, 9 mm., ≤lowest floret, veins, 5, rounded, awns, absent; Florets, 4 per spikelet; Axis, scabrous, not extended; Callus, straight white hairs, 1 mm.; Lemma, 9.5 mm., lanceolate, rolled, green, veins, 7, glabrous, convergent, tip, 2-forked, awns, #1, 13 mm., attached on back, gently curving; Palea, 6 mm., <lemma, membraneous, veins, prominently ciliate; Stamens, #2; Anthers, 1.5-1.7 mm.; Ovary, glabrous; Stigma, feathery; Achene, unknown.
