198. S. rostratum. S. caule aculeato piloso, pilis apice stellatis, foliis pinnatifidis, laciniis obtusis, antheris declinatis corniforrnibus, infima maxima productissima. Tab. 24. 198. *S. rostratum*. *S.* with a prickly, hairy stem—the hairs being star-shaped at the tip—pinnatifid leaves with obtuse segments, and deflexed, horn-shaped anthers, the lowest being the largest and most elongated. Plate 24.
Hab. ............. in horto Monspeliensi cultum. ☉ (v. v. h. m. ) Cultivated in the Montpellier garden. ☉ (Seen alive in the herbarium.)
Caulis teres, 2-3-pedalis, ramosus, viridiusculus, aculeatus, pilosus uti petioli, pedunculi, pedicelii cafycesque, pilis longis cinereis apice stellatis. Folia pinnatifida, laciniis sinuatis, utrinquè præcipuè subtus pilosa, pilis stellatis sessilibus, subsimplicibus, sublus nervosa, sparsè aculeata. Petioli subleretes, pilosi. Aculei subulati, recti, flavi, graciles, acieuliformes, inæquales. Racemi laterales, simplices. Pedunculi teretes, longi; pedicellis parvis, unifloris. Calyx villosus, aculeatus, primum 5-fidus, laciniis aculis subinermibus ; post efflorescentiam auctus, 5-dentalus, valdè aculeatus, aculeis longioribus. Corolla magna, lutea, ex tus pilosa, subirregularis, se mi 5-fida , laciniis acutiuscuis. Antheræ luleæ, corniformæ, una maxima, productissima, arcuata. Bacca globosa, ciceri duplo major, calyce aucto strictè lecta. Stem terete, 2–3 feet tall, branched, greenish, prickly, hairy—as are the petioles, peduncles, pedicels, and calyces—with long ash-colored hairs that are stellate at the tip. Leaves pinnatifid, with sinuate lobes; hairy on both sides (especially beneath) with sessile, sub-simple stellate hairs; nerved beneath; sparsely prickly. Petioles sub-terete, hairy. Prickles subulate, straight, yellow, slender, needle-like, unequal. Racemes lateral, simple. Peduncles terete, long; pedicels small, one-flowered. Calyx villous, prickly; initially 5-cleft, with acute, nearly unarmed lobes; enlarging after flowering, 5-toothed, heavily prickly, with longer prickles. Corolla large, yellow, hairy on the outside, slightly irregular, semi-5-cleft, with rather acute lobes. Anthers yellow, horn-shaped; one very large, greatly elongated, and curved. Berry globose, twice the size of a chickpea, closely enclosed by the enlarged calyx.
