Photograph taken December 26, 2003. The warm water has the rotten-egg smell typical of hot springs. State water officials said the sulfurous water does not pose a public health threat but may be harmful to the Salinas River ecosystem. In addition to sulfur, the water could contain other dissolved minerals that could be toxic to fish. The warm temperature of the water may also be harmful. The water was being channeled into the city's storm drain system, which eventually empties into the Salinas River.
