I took this photo to show the Redbud (Cercis sp.) that lined the main plaza of Torvizcón. Later, John M of the California Native Plants list server (CA-NATIVES@CALYPTEANNA.COM) wrote to tell me this tree is Cercis siliquastrum L. Common names for Cercis siliquastrum L. seem to be Árbol del Amor (Granada, Spain), Arbol de Judea (Argentina, Chile), Judasbaum (Germany), judasboom (Holland), Judas tree, Nandumbus (Argentina), and Rosebud (Israel). The common name reference to Judas comes from a legend stating that Judas Iscariot hung himself on this type of tree.

I wonder whether the presence of Judas trees in the main plaza is related to the practice of burning Judas on Easter Sunday.
