No. 472, 29 Nov 2011, characters observed while keying: Perennial to 5 dm; Bracts lowest bract well-exceeding the infloresence; Infloresence lateral spikelets sessile; Spikelets > 2 per culm, terminal spikelet has female flowers above male flowers (gynecandrous); Perianth without petal-like parts, subtended by a chaff-like bract; Perigynia thin at maturity, flat except where distended by achene; Anthers basifixed; Ovary 1, completely enveloped in a closed sac-like bract; Styles and Stigmas 2.
