The Wind River Basin
The Little and Big Wind River flow east into this basin and bend north at their confluence where they join to Yellowstone River in Montana, which in turn feeds the Missouri River. This area served as a rendezvous spot in 1830 and 1838 where trappers and traders met to exchange goods.
Indians have also used this basin for winter quarters and successful hunting grounds. In 1864 a reservation was established to provide hunting for the Shoshone under Chief Washakie. Today 1.7 million acres of the basin make up the Wind River Indian Reservation, home to the Shoshone and Arapahoe tribes.
