Named by Captain George Vancouver to honor the British ambassador to the Court of Madrid, Alleyne Fitzherbert, whose title was Baron St. Helens. "Lawala Clough" is an Indian name meaning "smoking mountain." "Low-We-Not-Thlat" means "Throwing up smoke"; "Low-We-Lat-Klah" means "The Smoking Mountain." The elevation was 9,677 feet before May 18, 1980 eruption.
