The place where Coolidge Dam was built was known as 'Needles Eye' because it was a narrow section of the canyon of the Gila River. As an application of their criteria-based methodology for determining the mechanism of transverse drainage development, Douglass, et al. (2009) determined overflow as the mechanism for transverse drainage of the Gila River through Coolidge Dam Canyon.
