Mountain group extending form the north end of the Overton Arm of Lake Mead, in Nevada, generally northeastward into Arizona to the Virgin River; the Virgin River separates these mountains from the Beaver Dam Mountains to the north.
The mining district in the northern part of the Virgin Mountains is the Copper King District, also known as the Key West or the Bunkerville District. Copper ore was discovered in the area in the late 1890's and later the ore was found to contain traces of nickel and platinum. Through the years several unsuccessful attempts were made to recover these metals. In the mid-20th century, mining activity was confined to development of tungsten and mica-beryl deposits. Primary mines are the Key West, the Great Eastern, and the Silver Leaf mine (Longwell, et al., 1965). Currently referred to as the Bunkerville District (Tingley, 1998).
