Some maps show that Slacks Canyon Road turns southwest-northeast and crosses pass. Other maps show that the road instead turns north west in the direction of the Stockdale Mountain Access Parking.

San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth

On private ranch land, about 1/4 mile northeast, is the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD).

Carpenter et al. (2012) reported on frictional properties and sliding stability of the San Adreas fault from a deep core obtained by the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD). They found that the fault is extremely weak (friction coefficient, µ = ~ 0.10), and anomalously low rates of frictional healing, consistent with aseismic creep.
