| San Andreas Fault Observatory at DepthOn private ranch land, about 1/4 mile northeast, is the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD).Carpenter et al. (2012) reported on frictional properties and sliding stability of the San Adreas fault from a deep core obtained by the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD). They found that the fault is extremely weak (friction coefficient, µ = ~ 0.10), and anomalously low rates of frictional healing, consistent with aseismic creep.
