Approximately between 36°N and 37°N latitude is an area of topographic subsidence thought to result from downward flow in the convecting mantle (Saleeby and Foster, 2004). This may in part explain the southward course of the Kings and Kaweah Rivers into the Tulare Lakebed instead of north to the Pacific Ocean through the San Francisco Bay.
